Here is my new toy from xmas:

The D50 is my first dSLR. I used my brother’s film SLR for my photography class 3 years ago, but film is dead unless you move into one of the larger formats such as medium format, etc. Even then, film is a pain in the ass. As many of you may know, I enjoy taking pictures with my outdated S45, having taken tons of pictures good and bad. If you don’t know what the difference is between a point-and-shoot camera and a SLR, it’s basically the difference between a consumer vs a pro camera. While the D50 is more of a hobbyist/prosumer SLR than a professional camera, it takes great pictures. While there is a better Nikon on market right now, the difference in cost is pretty big. A couple of months ago, I was ready to drop the $1000 for the D80, but the D50 was too good a value to pass up on. Of course, I did not pay retail for it…but thats a different story
The fact that you could get a great dSLR for under $600 is incredible.
Here are the first pictures I have taken with my D50. The first thing that should stand out with these pictures are the blurring out of the background. These shots have a narrow or very narrow depth of field. This is something that is much more difficult to achieve with your mom’s camera from Walmart.

A Adobe Acrobat vulnerability was announced by some hackers today. It is interesting because this is a very simple hack that shows the vulnerability of PDFs to XSS injection. This is a pretty big deal for any sites out there that have PDFs on site as it could allow for hackers to use your site as a means to do XSS. Security exploits are announced by the hour, but this one was important enough to make Slashdot and eMarkLee because of its span. We’re talking about millions of sites/pdfs out there that are vulnerable to this.
It is a pretty simple hack, just doing this:
http://path/to/pdf/file.pdf#whatever_name_you_want=javascript:your_code_here
Of course, one could do much worse things like cookie stealing, spoof-site redirection, etc. There are workarounds and this only affects some browsers (IE6, of course), but in the meantime you should be a bit more careful with links to PDFs for a while.

There have been 2 shows that I have just caught up on on my Tivo and I must say these shows have been highly intriguing. These are reality shows done right.
1. Everest – 6 episode series of a set of people making it up Everest. This has to be one of the top shows of the year…even better than SuperNanny and How I Met Your Mother. It shows you through the entire journey, from acclimation at each of the camps, all the way to the top and back. Along the way are deaths, illnesses, and all kinds of drama. Production for the series has a high cheese level like a chant of “ever..ever…ever…rest…rest…rest” every time it hits a commercial break, and a constant repeat of similar stories. Ultimately, the motley crew including a guy with both legs amputated to a LAFD guy, make this show one of the most compelling I’ve seen since Temptation Island.
2. Man vs Wild – Bear, a ex-special forces guy that looks kind of like Batman, sans the body armor and mask, goes on survival trips with other Batman cameramen and does crazy stunts and survival gimmicks. He does stuff like eating meat from a freshly killed zebra in Africa to jumping into a frozen lake in Alaska. Many will draw comparisons between this show and Survivorman but Man vs Wild is at such a larger scale that it is not a good comparison. Survivorman is almost elementary compared to Man vs Wild, although one may question the authenticity of Man vs Wild. Regardless, when you see this guy squeeze the liquid from elephant dung into his mouth to prevent dehydration, you will be intrigued.

Happy 2007. As part of the new year, I have decided to update my blog with a new look. I have also updated the system to allow for moblogging (posting blogs/pics with my phone). This should make my blog a bit more fun and updated more frequently.
My old blog is here. I am undecided on whether I want to convert my old entries into the new system…stay tuned.
